How long does it take for the effects of castrating a male dog to start working?

ie. aggressiveness towards other dogs, trying to mount anything that moves!! etc, etc.

Just curious as our lurcher is being a real pain at the moment and is steadily getting worse the older he gets (6).

Possibly forever, as it is not really guaranteed to work that way in older specimen. It will anyways only work on the hormonal part, not learned behaviours. Its not a miracle cure, but can work when applied alongside other measures. It also depends on what "being a pain" means in this particular case.
