Service pack 2 has caused hundreds of computers to go down. Many people I know have lost everything. Do not download it! Don't know the answer for you but will see what I can find out as my other half builds machines.
Katana, I've just had an update thing come through for Service Pack 2 and cancelled the download because I remembered seeing your warning. Do you know what the problem is with this? And will everything continue to function if you don't install it, or will there be compatibility issues with other updates?
I am completely techno-dumb and simply use my computer as if it's a very clever typeriter, so worry a lot aobut these things as I'm such an ignoramus and wouldn't be able to remedy anything that went wrong!
XP was produced with "holes" that the service pack is meant to patch, but if you have installed any Internet Security such as Norton it doesn't like it and will corrupt your system.
You could have to wipe the entire system and re-install everything.
I haven't downloaded SP2 and there was awarning not to in "Computer Active" magazine recently, issue 174 advising people about it.
To avoid any automatic downloads go to "control panel" click on "system" go to "automatic updates" and change to "update manually" This is what I have done and the other half and my parents. It will then ask you if it can download stuff rather than doing it itself.
Will keep you informed if I hear any changes or if they make if safe.
