Sorry to be a pain. We are desperate to get Jacques happy and settled on the lead, but at a loss as to know which lead/collar etc to try.

The dog trainer was shocked that Jacques was so unruly, but my guess is he had to do far too much jerking and snatching back to get Jacques by his side, and he felt embarrassed! Jacques isn't that bad but he is a strong, healthy 3 year old and insists on being out in front! I have severe arthritis in my joints which makes walking him impossible unless one of the men are holding the lead.

Jacques is our 14th whippet over 40 years and he is the first one we've had with this behaviour with.

I have tried the Halti but the design isn't for hounds of the whippet/greyhound shape. They are too narrow in front and too deep chested.

The figure of 8 lead and Canny collars sounds good but the reviews aren't so promising.

We need someone with first hand exp. with a pulling whippet and what they've found helped.

We live in Leighton Buzzard, If anyone would be willing to call in and see the boy in action, and possibly help, we would be very, very grateful. Travelling costs covered of course.

Oh for the days of 4 gentle, obedient dogs and me not so menopausal!!!!!

Thanks!

i use the halti head collar on my lurcher geys and canny collar on my non ped whippet

OK thanks Rusty w2..

20 years ago, I used to walk 4 whippets without a problem. Before the days of arthritis! >_<

Jacques is like a mouse inside the house but outside, he pulls and weaves and twists and turns at will. The dog trainer said he had been spoiled and was stubborn. Some of that is true, as like most whips Jacques is lovable, loving and easy to spoil! But for 2 years we have had our Sam alongside, who has been the stabilising canine influence in our home. o:)

Sam also pulled, but only to get to the bridle path that leads to the open fields. Both boys were/are obedient to recall. Since Sam's passing Jacques has become bolder outside the home but quieter inside.

I would love to add a young female eventually, but until Jacques is steadier outside the home I won't stand a chance in persuading my husband!

Many years ago I used to walk 3 whippets plus my young son in his pram 3 miles to my parents home. 40 years later, I seem unable to walk one whippet 20 yards!!

;)

Thanks!

the reason i use them is walking 3 and they spot a cat they are easy to pull to your side and dont pull you over i bought mine cheap of ebay it sounds as though he wants to be boss over you put him on a short lead and keep giving him a little tug back hi,ll get fed up dont give in to him .. show him your the boss ..

I use a canni collar on my 4 yr old whippet, he has always pulled while on walks. In the show ring he's fine. He is very stubborn and I tried a harness, halti, gentle leader and a figure of 8. I can honestly way the canni collar works the best. I have complete control over him when we meet other dogs too.

He knows I am boss, but while on his lead he just goes deaf!!!

Bertha, could you tell me what size you had? Canny Collar are offering a month's guarantee or your money back so it's got to be worth a go!! Thanks. x

I use Gentle leaders on my 3 whippets and they are really good .

I have gone for a Canny collar as the company does a 30 day money back guarantee if not completely satisfied. Also obtained helpful info from a lady dog trainer who does training classes, lives near us and keeps lurches and among her boarder is a whippet!

Thanks for your help. Will keep in touch.

I like the canny collar but found it a pain getting them on and off down the beach, they can be

a bit fiddly when the girls are bouncing around. I used size 2 with mine as well.

But the figure of 8's i can get on and off with one hand, leaving one free to hold the bouncers

until its their turn

Well, seeing as we are having the `professional` out on Tuesday pm I thought it only fair to give the Canny collar a try. It was easy enough to put over Jacques face with the help of a few tit bits, but within seconds of walking around the garden with him, he had pawed it off! We had several attempts to put it back over his nose, but he either jumped up at me continually as if to say `get this thing off` or he managed to wrangle it off himself.

I aim to have another go tomorrow. Daren't take him out with it yet though. Watch this space! :sweating:
