MY YOUNG BITCH HAD HER FIRST SEASON AT 10MTH OLD.IT WAS VERY HEAVY.AFTER THE NORMAL 3WEEK PERIOD SHE DRIED UP, AND ON DOING SO I LET HER HAVE A 50Y RUN AT THE TRACK. A FEW DAYS LATER I NOTICED THAT HER TEATS WERE BLUE AND SWOLLEN. I HAVE TRIED EPSOM SALTS PLUS MED FROM VETS,IN THIS TIME SHE HAS HAD NO FREE RUNNING ,JUST SHORT LEAD WALKS. NOW 3WK ON SHE IS NO BETTER.

HAS ANYBODY GOT ANY ADVICE FOR ME. :(

Our young bitch Waterford has also just been in season for the first time, she ran the bends at Ayr and is also bruised around her teats-I've rubbed her with a witch hazel/arnica gel which I keep in the fridge, the bruising isn't bothering her and the same thing happened to Fluke the first time she came into season. It should go itself with a little time.

Is your bitch showing signs of discomfort then?

Karen Boyd

THANKS FOR THE REPLY, ALREADY USING WITCH HAZEL, SHE ISNT SHOWING ANY SIGNS OF DISCOMFORT. WANTED TO GET HER BACK INTO TRAINING AS SHE HAS HAD 6WK AWAY FROM IT. DIDNT WANT TO CAUSE ANY DAMAGE HAS I HAVE ONLY EVER HAD DOGS IN THE PAST

most people keep thier bitch,s off for 12weeks as the stomach needs to go back to normal. 9 weeks out is usually when pups would be due if lined and this is when they should not be ran

We are well aware of the problem 9 week period.

It's not necessary nor feasible for such a long break especially in 6 monthly bitches-they'd be laid up permanently if one was to follow such guidelines.

Everyone has their own methods and what we do works for us/dogs.

this was just advise for paul not a dig at anybody. paul was asking for individual advise. like you say steve everybody is different and so are the bitch,s seasons they vary in each dog

:D i KNOW WHEN WE HAD WHIZZIWIG SHE WAS A SIX MONTHLY BITCH AND WE HARDLY GOT ANY RACING OUT OF HER. IF WE RACED HER TOO EARLY FROM HER SEASON SHE WUD STRAIN HER STOMACH MUSCLES LIKE SAMMY BOY SAYS BUT IF WE KEPT HER OFF FOR THE FULL TWELVE WEEKS WE HARDLY GOT ANY RACING OUT OF HER.. LIKE SAMMY BOY SAYS EACH TO THEIR OWN WHAT WORKS FOR ONE WONT WORK FOR ANOTHER ALL BITCHES ARE DIFFERENT. I HEARD THIS YEARS AGO SOMEONE ONCE SAID DONT RUN THEM FOR FOUR WEEKS IE THE 3 WEEKS THERY R IN SEASON AND A WEEK AFTER THEN RUN THEM FOR 4 WEEKS THEN AROUND THE NINE TO TWELVE WEEK PERIOD LAY THEM OFF AS THEY WIL RUN FLAT HERE I CANT FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER WHO TOLD ME THIS BUT SEEMS TO MAKE SENSE. I HOPE TYPUR BITCH IS OK NOW PAUL PERSONALY IF IT WAS ME I WUD LEAVE HER NOW TILL 12 WEEKS OUT BUT THATS JUST ME.

HIYA PAUL,

Our sally 16lb didnt have her 1st season till she was 2 1/2 and she bruised rearly bad and swelled up like yours, she wasn't in any discomfort, we just massaged her and put witch hazel on for bruising, after a few weeks it cleared but the bruising went right up to her groin it looked awfull but she was ok, just give her a bit more time, all the best.

My bitch was a 5 mth bitch and i used to run her the first week out of season up till the fourth week out then i just kept walking her for another four weeks then started running her again till her next season. If your dog has milk on or her glands or they are swollen beware she does not get mastites as this can be fatal,i have known it happen to other peoples bitches before. ;) ;)

nearly lost my bitch due to mastitas she was in a bad way, rest and antibiotics, and a big vet bill. yes all dogs are different sue you are right all you can do is keep an eye on her if the swelling goes hard and she goes off food&drink get her to a vet she will dehydrate. mine could not stand up, good luck hope she gets well

I HAVE KEPT BITCHES ALL THE TIME BEEN RACING AND FIND THAT THERE FIRST SEASON IS THE WORST  ALL MY DOGS HAVE HAD THE SAME SYMPTONS AS YOURS ,MY ADVICE LEAVE HER OFF FOR 10/12 WEEKS JUST WALK HER . HOW PEOPLE GET THERE DOGS TO PERFORM JUST OUT OF SEASON BAFFLES ME,MINE TAKE AT LEAST 12 WEEKS TO GET BACK TO NORMAL

Our local osteopath has always told us never to run a bitch in nor out of season due to obvious reasons, we have always followed his advice, we did however give Pintsize one run last year at the scottish derby, she was 7 weeks, with no ill effects that we noticed :p I personally do not start training my dogs untill about 12 weeks out........... but as Steve says it is up to the owners and how their dogs react........ :D

I'm with John on this one, apart from it being like flogging a dead horse, Ella is a miserable bugger when she's just been in season.

Never thought for a moment that anyone was 'having a dig' debbie, just stating my view on the subject.

Our Tanyia is the first 6 monthy, some times 5 monthy weve had. We dont race much in the winter and shes not keen on the bends. We kept her off for her first season, it took ages to get her back to her normall self. After that with the vets ok we raced her though being carefully not to race her at 9 weeks. Shes a differnt dog.

Ok it slowed her down but shes fit and did her no harm at all. She didnt get depressed either, so she cant wait to get on with straight racing again now.

Shes just had club racing this winter as and when the weathers allowed though her season and shes bubbling.

I think a key point here is not to treat the bitch like it is ill, its only a season. Stick to a routine as close as possible. As to fitness the bitch is likely to be at her peak-prep for pups- all this is pointed to by the speed increase most show capable of- prior to the break.

Also, after the 3 week period if you allow free running an animal would not run unless it wanted to, they're alot cleverer than most people give them credit for.

Bitches in the wild have to run in order to feed their young and as dogs travel in packs and cover great distances bitches need to keep up.

Just our opinion.

Karen
