Decided to visit Williamson Park for the day to have a go at photographing butterflies. I've never been to Lancaster before but it looks like a beautiful city and plan to go back sightseeing. Williamson Park is a great day out, there's 57 acres of land and dogs are welcome to walk around the grounds. :thumbsup:

I went there last year. It's a really nice place isn't it :thumbsup:

Some wonderful coloured butteflies there and some lovely shots. :thumbsup: Did you use a macro lens or tripod?

I hate carrying my tripod about...it's so darned heavy.....but essential for those close up nature shots to get them pin sharp In fact I've only used it once on holiday recently....and boy was it a pain. :angry: I must get a lightweight one (someone lent me this one for the time being).

Really lovely photos - I am petrified of butterfly's though. I vaguely remember going to a butterfly house as a little girl and crying; never liked them since :b

Nicola I didn't use a tripod (I'd read a comment in a butterfly house in Sheffield that they preferred you not using tripods because they can get in the way of others) So I just improvised by leaning on handrails and crouching etc. I also upped the shutter speed a little and the IS was probably kicking in.

Biggest dilemma was the heat because I'd been photographing the grounds outside and my lense steamed up when I went inside so I warmed it in front of one of the warm air blowers.

Trish I'm still using the 350D and 28-135mm IS lens (with macro), wait a bit because rumour has it they're bringing out a 40D to superceed the 30D. Going on Canons previous history of release dates, it's estimated it'll be out Aug / Sept. :thumbsup:

Beautiful pics - :thumbsup: we went to one in stratford upon avon last bank holiday, looks like similar species. I LOVE butterflies :wub: and was in my element, spent about 3hours there and took about 100 photos ...with my little camera phone :b :lol:

Jacs, have you or are you going to join your local camera club? You're obviously quite knowledgeable these days. 8) I joined my local one a year or two back (went as a guest with someone for a while and just observed). They're a great source of inspiration, as they hold trips away and competitions. You learn so much watching others having their photos judged. Also guest speakers regularly do the circuit, and I've often come away fired up and enthusiatic with lots of new ideas.

There's only so much that can be self-taught (maybe you've been on a course?) and it really does help mingling wth other photographers. I wouldn't recommend these clubs for absolute novices as they don't give you much in the way of instruction, and expect a certain level of skill that you can eventually contribute to the club. I was lucky in that a work colleague and neighbour was good at photography and became a member. She then invited me along, so I just stood back and quietly oberved and gleaned information over a period of time. I eventually saved up for and bought my Canon 20D, a good quality wide angle lens for landscapes, and I'm hoping to enter my first landscape competition the autumn with some of my recent photos from Mull.

No I was going to enrol on an evening college course but it clashed with my whippet racing nights.

I'm basically doing a lot of reading ( on and off line) and taking a lot of photos, and Tony's 30D software enables you to look back at your images and see in detail where you went wrong from a technical point of view. Like you say though, there is a limit to what can be self-taught. I might look into it again now I'm part-time.
