Unfortunately on Sunday the 8th January 2023 I lost my beautiful boy Bruce. Bruce was a Border Terrier who was 10 years old. He was such a little character and a proper loyal dog who loved life and got me through some very hard times recently. Although I have an older dog too (15) in the house, the house just feels so empty and we are both lost without our Bruce. Sunday was just a normal day for us. We'd just had tea at around 5:30pm and Bruce had been playing with his ball and was quite lively as usual. I then took my partner home and around 7pm Bruce seemed to be shaking, i thought he was missing my partner as he really loves her and makes a huge fuss of her. About an hour later he looked like he was going to be sick , which he was and was very lethargic and wanted to go outside for a poo, but he couldn't poo, I thought he must be constipated. He was then sick again after I had given him some milk. I was getting quite worried but wasnt sure what was wrong with him. A couple of hours passed and i decided to ring the emergency vet. By the time we got him there sadly he was in a very poor state. The vet wasnt sure what was wrong with Bruce and said that she could do blood tests and x-ray which would take the cost to £1500. If he would need an operation it could go up to £5000. We were too late for all that as sadly Bruce took his last meaningful breath on the vets table. My heart was and still is completely broken and i now blame myself for not getting him there sooner. I know though that even if I had he may gave needed an operation which I couldn't afford unfortunately so Bruce wouldn't have have a chance anyway. I know time will be a healer but at the moment I'm in a right state and cant help but think what if.

I am so sorry for your loss. Many of us on this forum have lost dogs in the past and we know just how much it hurts.

For what it's worth, it sounds to me that you responded very quickly when he fell ill, but he deteriorated very quickly too. It's natural to think 'what if?' but you did everything you could have done.

We are all here for you if you want to take about Bruce, and we will all understand.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Offering you support and empathy. It's always awful when one of our dogs dies, but you did everything you could, and he was only ill for a very short time. Please don't beat yourself up about the mights and the might nots, because it's clear that the various veterinary procedures suggested would have been extremely stressful for him even if you had been able to okay them, and likely would not have made any difference. Any time you'd like to post here you will find us very much on board with how you are feeling. It's overwhelming just now, but nothing and nobody can take away the good times.
