whats everones opinion on how many litters a brood bitch should have.
 
Two. Three at the absolute most. Suppose it depends over what period of time and how big a litters she has and how quickly she recovers as to how i feel about it. Then again i wouldn't of minded a pup out of Mega Delight's 7th litter or Farloe Oyster's 8th litter :thumbsup:

In my opinion it is definitely time for restrictions on how many litters can be registered for a bitch. Perhaps then people would not treat them as 'cash cows' :rant: I have already said, that it is my intention to put a proposal forward to limit a bitch to no more than 3 litters being registered. I also do not agree with bitches being bred one season after another with no break inbetween litters.

i agree totally the bitches welfare should always come first
 
we usualy spade them after 3 litters at the most .but i think this should depend on how easy the first and second whelping went if easily dont see a problem with 4 depends on how healthy the mother is

:thumbsup: Well said Kath! I also think that as a governing body the B.W.R.A. should insist that breeders' stop sending pups to their new homes as young as 5 weeks. Discraceful! Under the 2000 Animal Act No bitch should have more than 1 litter every 12 months, she should be 1 year old at her first mating and she should have NO MORE than 4 litters in her life! Some people see a brood bitch as a regular source of income. The genuine breeder breeds for themselves, primarily, to keep themselves in the sport and it is the "puppy farmers", for want of a better term, that should be reined in by those in control of the sport! IMO :wub:
 
I personally would welcome a proposal regarding breeders but there's a simple way to stop excessive breeding - DON'T BUY FROM THEM!

A lot of new owners hold a pups breeding in higher esteem than their rearing, if you buy a pup that hasn't been reared properly you're asking for big problems, no matter what the breeding.
 
A brood bitch will only be seen as a cash cow to the owner if there's a market out there for them. Buyers and stud owners can be a big influence just as much as the bitch but you don't see them rushing for the moral high ground either.

Personally, I believe the best quality of breeding comes from a sound brood who's had a long racing career that's bred from once this has been well established i.e. around 5-6yrs old. I also believe that first lining genetically will be superior to anything lined from the bitch years later. I'm not saying they'll be faster, just more likely to be long lived and durable because of how DNA is replicated.

Interesting topic if people are breeding none ped whippets and doing a great job in rearing them and still making money off the sale of the litters its news to me ..no way is it cheap to rear a litter of any breed if done right ..there's a few facts we consider before we breed a bitch ..will we have the time and devotion to spend with the litter and the bitch in whelp..could we afford £500 plus if a c-sections needed, is the bitch fit and healthy ..could we rehome any pup that was brought back ..totally agree pups are to young to leave at 6 weeks old..personally i don't think a bitch should be mated every season there body's have not had time to recover ..3 litters is max imo

imo the best brood bitches are fast but lightly raced and i would never wait any longer than 3 years for the first mating

if all goes well maybe a further two litters making a total of 3 letting the girl have rest between litters

spot on vicky also wouldnt mind a pup from the greyhounds you mentioned
 
out of interest as vicky mentioned the great greyhounds broods 7 and 8 litters does anyone know of any broods used in the non ped world that have had more than 3 to 4 litters

Dessie off the top of my head - 4 to Mickey Mouse & 1 to Mad Return.
 
According to the experts......

Providing your animal is in optimal health and checked between pregnancies...

One litter per year up to the age of 6/7years is acceptable.....
