Breeding contract

Hi I'm getting a male pup soon .I will be agreeing to keep it intact so it can be used as a stud dog but not on a commercial basis. What kind of contract will i need to sign from the breeder.

It depends. Does the breeder know you plan to breed from him? If I understand it correctly the breeder of your pup may not want him to be bred from, so can put an endorsement on his registration.

But isn't it a little early for you to know if he is going to be suitable for breeding?

JoanneF, I'm not sure, but my reading of BarryTindall's post is that the breeder wants him to keep it intact to allow the breeder to be able to use it as a stud. if that's right I would be a bit concerned as although the breeder will obviously know its breeding they will not know if the pup will grow up into a good example and of course will not know about its health. Other than that I can not offer any advice.

You need to speak with a proper solicitor, one who specialises in dog law. I would recommend Trevor Cooper, but there are others.

Note that if you or the breeder do/don't do something that is in breach of the contract, the law will not force you/them to do otherwise. It is purely breach of contract and will be treated as such.
