After reading the Breed Notes in this weeks Dog World I would like to get in touch with the Breed Council with details of my dog that I lost on Wednesday with this evil condition. Does anybody have an address or telephone number so that those of us with dogs presently suffering or those that have passed away at a young age (my boy was 2 months away from his 4th birthday) can send details to help to find a solution to this problem. The effect on both dog and owner is devastating and to write about it is extremely hard but it must be done to try and prevent further suffering. I struggled with by dear little boy for over 18 months with a sucession of vets and specialists but to no avail and he and I lost our fight in the early hours of Wednesday morning. I cannot begin to tell you of the heartache and anything I can do to stop it happening to others I will do. We cannot bury our heads in the sand, this is a real and ongoing problem. Please if you have any experience of this yourself write to the Breed Council with details.

So does anybody have an address?

I am afraid that this is a very complex subject. Have a look at the above link. My poor boy suffered from most of these symptoms at one time or another. He started with colitis. After finding a "cure" by feeding him almost exclusively on chicken wings he regained his weight (he had been a breathing skeleton and everybody was giving up on him). Unfortunately this was not the end of the story and his pleural cavity filled with fluid which was drained several times. A long and very hard road followed, terminating in him losing his fight.

Sorry to scare you but we all need to be aware.

Well done Jan for speaking out about this and also Carol.

I've pm'ed you already, but this is such devastating news, I can only imagine how hard it has been for you and your boy, it really sounds such an evil condition. If I'm right this is the 3rd dog from that particular litter to have suffered from this

:( :(

This problem really must be tackled for the long term health of our wonderful breed.

I really am so sorry Jan

Is this really the 3rd dog from the same litter to have this illness? Have the same pair that produced this litter been bred before or after??

There are three from this litter that have been affected. The bitch has had only one litter.

Thanks for putting that link on , At least we can be aware of the symptems

I am so sorry you have lost your boy to this awful disease.

It is my worst fear for my Whippets.

I find it strange that any guide to Whippets in dog magazines/books etc says that there are no known hereditary ilnesses in the breed, and yet everyone knows of at least one Whippet who has died of auto immune disease...

Louise Tope is/has conducted a study into Whippets with auto immune disorders, having one herself, you can find her details in the latest biennial, or let me know and I will send you her phone number privately- I know she won't mind you contacting her.

Thinking of you,

The problem is that to have an illness needs to be investigated and have a study done before it gets included as an hereditory illness.

If you look at Iggies they also have no known illnesses but look howmany have epilepsy

I am so sorry for anyone whose dogs have an AI disease. They are a most distressing set of diseases.

I know too many people who've lost whippets to AI disease or who continue to battle with it to save their dogs lives. :(

A few years ago now, those of us concerned about auto-immune diseases in dogs (not just whippets) attended a seminar at Ryton (Sky Blue),there where a few speaker's,I think all were vet's and specialists in auto-immune related issues.

At the time, they were not able to say if these diseases were definitely hereditary. They did ask for help from owner's and breeder's filling out detailed health questionares, and forwarding them to a vet who I believe is based at Cambridge.

Bj has a better memory than me,and possibly still has the relevent info somewhere,if not,Louse Tope certainly will.

I am deeply sorry for anyone, who has undergone the trauma that these diseases cause.Unfortunately witnessing the distress they can cause to an owner and much loved dog.Thankfully, not mine.

So many of you seem to know someone who has or who has lost a dog to this awful thing. Please please urge them to send details to the Breed Council.

A quote from Edmund Burke is very pertinent.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing"

This condition is evil and we all need to do something. Let us try to find out how we can by pooling our knowledge.

I am so sorry for silas and all who have had their whippets suffer from such horrid conditions as AI diseases can be.

I think there might be others than myself among the non-UK K9ers that would be interested in getting a copy of the relevant issue of Dog World - can anyone advise on how it could be obtained? I guess there is no chance anyone could get permission to publish the article on-line?

I know there have been whippets afflicted with AI disorders in Scandinavia.

Didn't the KC do a health survey of a year or so back - I remember filling in a questionnaire from the whippet club, but no one has published the results as far as I know.

Which autoimmune disease are we talking about, more specifically? Cushings? Do thyroid probs. in whippets have an autoimmune cause? I'm curious as I suffer from autoimmune disease myself.

Elizabeth

I believe the survey was only aimed at breeders but please correct me if I am wrong.

The Whippet Club sent the health questionare to every member,so everyone who is a member (and not just breeder's) got one.I think the K.C. also sent me one,not sure if that was because I'm on their database as a whippet owner,or from attending shows etc.But it was a few yrs ago,so I can't remember exactly.

At the same/similar time,Elaine Walker's husband was trying to organise whippet owner's to be open and honest about any breed health issues. There were articles printed in the The Whippet Club's magazine, about getting something 'off the ground' regarding health issues in whippet's.

Nothing came of it,despite hard work being done by Mr Walker, the fact that it died a death, suggests that very few breeders/owners were interested in being open and honest about possible health issues within the whippet breed.

Suspect that this is slowly changing,as now Margaret Dixon appears to be the person concerned, that can be contacted.
