This is very worrying. As if the heat wasn’t enough to contend with, now you need to be really careful about going in the water . It must be spreading across the country as it was on the front page of a local paper that one of our lakes has it.

We get these problems every year in some degree. The dutch water authority test the water and have a website where swimming water /lakes etc are given a rating so that if there is a danger in your area its easy to check.

Warnings are also posted on lampposts or trees along the waters edge so that the chances of toxic shock are reduced greatly. A lot is to do with common sense, if the water is scummy or cloudy dont let your dog swim in it.

When we were out and about last year in north Wales, one of the meres we walked around had a sign about algae. Worryingly, we went to an enclosed private dog field yesterday which had a large tub in thew middle that was actually full of bright green water. Of course, Jimbo decided to look in and have a lick. No ill effects so far, thankfully.
