Best approach for new pup around christmas time

I have read up a lot on what a puppy will need in the first few weeks in a new home.

The pup that I am getting is ready on the 23rd of Dec. It would have Christmas eve and Christmas Day to settle into his new environment. We have a boxing day meal at my mother in laws and the day after also an event at a family members'. Both of which there will be with varying ages of people and others dogs/cats - so great for socialisation with the puppy. I am just slightly concerned that it may be overwhelming for the pup to spend the whole afternoon two days in a row in a new environment.

Please let me know your thoughts on whether this will be great for the puppy or maybe a little too overwhelming, I do also understand that there are very mixed opinions on how to train and socialise a pup in the first few weeks. So if anyone else has gone through similar it would be great to hear your experiences. I guess it could all come down to the puppies personality?

Quality over quantity when it comes to socialisation. You don't want to overwhelm him. So can the family agree that there is gentle, quiet contact in small numbers and that when he needs it he can have quiet time? This sounds like a time when you might want to introduce a crate or even a carrier, to give him some quiet as much as give you some!

Thanks for your comment! I guess him being away from his new home for a few hours will be fine as long as he has a crate or something with his bed in, like you suggested, in a quiet room. Then he knows this bed is his safe and quiet spot and he can socialise as and when he is ready?

Yes, I would use a crate as a bolt hole. Keep a close eye that he isn't being over stimulated. Each pup has a different character so you will have to just be sensitive to his needs.

Sound words from Joanne, for me I just don't get the idea of getting a pup for Xmas but that's just me being me.

A new pup for a new home is not an easy thing. Help him/her to adjust by walking him/her to your new home. This is what I know.

Anne_e, this puppy is now long since arrived home but walking him into a new home runs the risk of pre-vaccination infection. I am unsure what your source is but can't see the benefit of this advice.
