Some of u have already answered this on whippet domain but saying as we have got both kinds of racing going on this weekend Im asking on k9. Bends or straights which do u prefer and why? Personally I prefer the straights as I think dogs get more injuries in the bends just my opinion though. Very exciting this weekend we have an irg bend race going on at Warwick and a straight race going on up here in the North at Dawdon. Maybe u like both but cant decide which one your going to. We shud have plenty to talk about on here after tommorows 2 races. Good luck to everyone who is racing tommorow on bends or straights lets hope all the dogs come off injury free.
Gotta be straights for me sherry as i have already said in whippet domain......i like to watch the bends but have to close my eyes some times a bit scary some of it especially when they go round that top bend )
I do prefer to watch the bends it's much more fun & you need a fair chunk of luck on the day however Ella can't bend so we don't do bend racing because she picks up too many injuries & scares the crap out of me, she runs so wide.
straights for me to but then again my dogs prefer straights and i also think there less injurys. it,s also nicer in the summer when the straight season is running even if you do get attacked by wasps at asforby lol .
i like bend racing (esp when we had kinsley ) you could go.....watch youre dog lose (in my case)and have a drink and a curry, and watch the racing from inside where its nice and warm
I think that Dawdon straight might have to suffer a poor turn out this weekend due to the fact with the bend champs being so close it is not a good time to switch dogs from bends to straights and then back again in a couple of weeks also the IRG will be top-ten points and ( nearly! )everyone who goes can run without being members!with added prize money also it is bound to make a difference to some that race although not all.We all prefer bend racing as i think our dog do also.you can watch and see the clever ones that rail or the others that stay wide and keep out of trouble then put all in down straight to finish all are different i think and great to watch them excell in thier own way not just who is the fastest but who thinks as well
Im afraid I disagree about there been a poor turn out at Dawdon. I think there will be a fair few there after all it is the first straight race of the season. It depends on what you call a poor turn out I suppose. I would imagine everyone who only straight races will be there. I know nearly all of the Rising Sun handicap are going to race their dogs and I would imagine there will be a few from over Dawdon way. Anyway I hope both opens get a good turn out and once again good luck to everyone.
lucky white open originally run at new brancpeth always had a bumper turn out ,a Lott of dogs ready for straights, i personally dont like bends but dont mind going to watch
I used to like bend racing but not now. I will only straight race now. I was going to Dawdon tomorrow but John has to work  . Hope you's get a good turn out
far less toe injuries on the bends due to the sand finnish, much more action to loook at, if all straight tracks had a sand finnish would be much safer for the dogs.
I like watching the bends best, but to see the something like Biddy or Dramma queen do 8. ? for 150 is mind blowing, at least the bends gives closer finnishes between the front and back dogs.
Straight racing for me! as that is what a whippet is bred for as the saying goes (as fast as a whippet ) not the stanima of a whippet. As far as The Lucky White Open goes i remember in the late ninties when there used to be over a 100 dogs at Brancpeth open as everybody got excited as it was the first straight open of the year.It just goes to show how far down hill our hobby has gone in a short space of time.We have now less whippets running but more governing bodies to me it just does not work, there is more double bookings of opens than ever so this does not help matters at all.
I hope that the open at Dawdon gets a healthy turn out I would have been there but I am working this afternoon but I agree with Steve because when I used to do the bends I would never switch between the two I would do the bends then change on to the straights after the Bend Championships. I always liked the bends and loved to watch but I dont do the bends anymore but even when I did bend racing was always limited to me due to the location of most of the bend racing. So I have put most of my efforts into straight racing over the years and have enjoyed it and met some great people and look forward to getting to as many opens as I can this year.
More governing bodies?-I guess you are referring to the IRG, if so can i just say what an excellent organisation this is though-
Warwick today- weigh in till 11am-programmes printed, consolation racing for all, trials for those who required them, finals, cross-heats all run off and finished for 3pm.
Well Done to all the organisers! No re-runs, injuries, nice trophies and a good payout.
Back home in Lancaster for 6pm.
60+dogs there today. Not bad eh?
Decent food available and a very welcoming owner.
Excellent time saving idea too-entry money collected on the gate as you arrive in your vehicle, saving having to leave the stadium and lining up to re-enter.
Well what can i say? Both opens seemed to get a good turn out 60+ at warwick and 50+ at dawdon. Wonder if this was because they were at differnt ends of the country. Or is it just split half and half who prefers bends and who prefers straights. Either way Im glad both got a good turn out.
I was not referring to any particular orginisation i was just putting my point of view how i think whippet racing in general has changed.I think the IRG has a good variation of weight classes something different from the other two bodys, i have never had the chance to race in any IRG events as yet.Horden was suppose to have a straight event last year but it never came of not sure why.
