Do any of you 'bait' in the ring. I use food when training for obedience etc., but have not used it in the ring.

Or what do you do if your dog starts to go a little flat in the challenges, BoB, BiG..etc

Also, anybody have a recipe for non-crumbly liver-cake?

thanks

I bait in the ring, not many do. Your dog needs to have very good ears and not be upright in front or you could be shooting yourself in the foot :p

I do bait with one of mine whilst moving and on the table - cos he goes very flat. I bait the other on the table to take his mind off the judge going over him, as he is very particular about certain people - wierd bloomin' dog :p

I boil the liver in garlicy water, then chop it into little bits and bake in a low oven - they go hard and not at all crumbly - they also keep for yonks, hope this helps

Hi Zilloot

We dont bait any of ours, and try not to stand next to anyone who is baiting as this distracts the dogs.

The breeds that use the little squeeky toys are worse when they throw them to get to dogs attention in the ring. I could just catch it and throw it out of the ring as it puts a lot of people at a disadvantage when thier dogs are distracted by the bloody things!!!!

Richard has just reminded me that a raelly well known exhibitor did just what I mentioned above.

Whilst in the ring for BIS the person next to him had a squeeky toy which was upsetting his dog. She (the exhibitor) was throing it up and down and squeeking it to get her dogs attention.

Our whippet exhibitor leant across and caught the toy which was swiftly expelled from the ring. We dont know quite what happened next :D

I am sure that some exhibitors - certainly no whippet folk - do deliberately bait to distract the opposition. Another side to baiting is the use of liver/biscuits etc where little pieces end up all over the mat causing disruption to movement.

IF I HAVE to stand at the side of someone who baits I try to leave as big a gap as possible, face the dog the other way and, if all else fails, try to get between the baiter and my dog.

I bait Montee as he has perfect ear carraige and is sooo Handsome too  also Mayzee who as most peps know will do anything for food :)

At one show there was bull terrier whose owner had a sqeuky toy and kept throwing it up in the air in, it nearly landed on a Cocker and we all gave him dirty looks too ,

It was a veteran class and the judge said ` Ive got to give it to the Bull Terrier for his exhuberacnce !! to which I replied

`We can all bring a bloody ball   !! m e and the Cocker lady (who got 2nd ) were not very pleased . niether was the judge with my comment

I withdrew from further classes and said to him ,`when you judge the dogs and not what can jump the highest I will show under you again `

Completely out of order I know but I wasnt a happy bunny . i wouldnt have minded if the Bully had been any good but its feet alone were yellow  Yuk

Dawn , that just reminded me of at Newak once , Badger was the line up for BIS and the judge kept looking at him and a Boxer next to me . the woman with the Boxer kept throwing a toy and sqeeking it too , really disracting Badger , at the first opportuanty(sp) I grapped it and put it in my pocket and smiled ever so sweetly at the  woman .

Badger won B I S and the boxer lady got nowt !! :- "

the judge did comment on it and said there was no way she would have won with such bad sportsmanship at that , he said, it was obvious she was trying to put Badger off :huggles:

:D I blame it on the judges............ being in Rough Collies, they are expected to have their ears permently alert, which is just not natural, (if the judge is looking you have to do something to get the ears up at that percise moment or you don't even get consided) ............. now when I'm judging the breed, if I have seen the dog use the ears whilst being gone over, I know if the ear carrage is good or bad and won't expect that dog to continue exhibiting its ears. Just wish others would do the same, then there would be no more chucking balls, squeakies or food

I bait. I is a common practice here. I dont however do the bit where you come back to the judge & thro it on the ground. Just in hand & make the dog earns it. :))

I use liver. Best way is the get fresh. Slice it like lambs fry :x & wash it in warm water. While doing this, make sure you get as much of the blood out. That is what gets sticky later on. Then I boil it in salty water, till it is well & truely cooked through. It is then cooled & rinsed, & doing this washes any crap off. Dry & cut to size............no crumbs ;)

To make it very hard, just put in coat pocket, & have dry cleaned. When it comes back it will be hard :- "

Squeaky toys and throwing things are bad form in a line-up in my opinion.

I do bait (using liver cooked the way Joe described, not to Cartman's extremes ;) ) but it is enough at the best of times to just put your hand in the pocket for it and the dog will use its ears. When training the dog to bait you should be exuberant with it and throw it for the dog to catch, and talk excitedly etc and then in the ring the dog knows where the bait is coming from and puts its ears up as soon as you put your hand in your pocket or hold it in your hands or put it up to your own mouth (as if you're going to eat it)

The best baiters train with antics but use it in the ring very subtley so as to get the best out of their own dog and not distract the others. :)

I wouldnt dream of chucking it or dropping it anywhere, very unsporting, although Frodo would show his head off if we had been next to the squeeky toy chucker :D

I once rinsed and boiled my liver, dried it, baked it in the oven til it was really hard, turned the oven off, went and picked up mum, who was staying for a while, from the station. Dropped her at home then went to get some shopping for the weekend. When I got back I went to bag up the liver for the next days show and it was gone (w00t) 'Wheres the liver mum!! 'Oh was that what it was', she said, 'I threw that away, Im surprised at YOU leaving old food in the oven'.

Even when I explained what it was she just said 'How odd' :b

I also use dried liver in my pocket much the way Lana does.

However I have been known to toss the odd piece to get ears expressed when returning to the judge (depends on the dog & how willing they are to express their ears). Never in a line up.

I always pick it up (very bad form to leave it behind) and a dog trained to bait properly knows it doesn't get fed on the ground so won't be taking notice of other folks bait. Important voice over command when training to bait is "watch me".

:D Well the dried liver has it cracked...

.. all I need to do is move my fingers in a pocket direction and my entire division are lined up and to attention!!

Now, because of the liver, I need a solution for training the labrador to keep its drool inside it's mouth and not all over my kitchen floor, trousers, various whippets, it's own legs, ...... :x

There's no solution for that Zill ! Labs are labs and that's that. ;)

I have to agree with Dawn people who bait whippets and stand next to you seem to forget how food orientated some whippets are. We try to avoid them as well.

I actually think some people do it on purpose to distract your dog  As for bits of fur and sqeaky toys being tossed in the air well thats another story isn't it. Total disregard for others and their dogs.

I bait but do it very subtly as Lana put it. I don't go out there to distract other exhibotors. I usually just have some in my pocket, give the dogs bits of it outside the ring so they know there is some goodies in my pocket, then while in the ring I usually just have to put my hand to my pocket and the ears go up etc... Good for when you are wearing that outfit that dosn't have pockets  Anybody else have trouble sometimes finding those outfits with pockets??? I'm sure sometimes the store people think I'm carzy checking the pants for pockets :p I do some crazy things when looking for dog show outfits :teehee:

Would never use squeaky toys

When I use Dried liver I cut it up to little bits then put it in a microwave safe bowl cover it sometimes add abit of garlic, then cook it in the microwave till it is dried out.

 I would never try to distract other exhibitors - sorry if it sounded like that.... I just would like to change the rhino-with-laminitis that sometimes appears in the ring with me into her old showy self.

:sweating: thankfully it's not the Supermodel...

In fact, the Oldie has officially retired now so the Slobrador will probably get all the dried liver for her heelwork  (w00t) :teehee:

I dont think many Whippet people bait at all, so not sure if Zolan thinks a Whippet person does it on purpose or other breeds.

Ive never seen anyone in Whippets chucking it about to distract others. More of a worry (or bonus ;) ) is people eating around the ring, crisps and things

I had this problem recently when Flyn totally lost the plot cos he was far more interested in the lady sat at the ringside with a juicy bacon butty (w00t)

:p Years ago I was stupid enought to stand my oldie facing away from the bacon-van .... shoulda just turned her round.... doh
