I dont know wether any one you have pets that need repeat prescriptions , but as from November the 1st Vets are not , now allowed to charge for them  , Mayzee is on Vivitonin , 1 tablet a day for however long needed . Now from the vets these s were costing me £42.00 for 60 . Most of you know i would pay £42.00 per tablet should Mayzee require it , but Ive found a firm Via inter net where I can get them for £14.20 per 60 (w00t) Quite a saving as you can see , Not everything is cheaper than vets but it s well worth a visit . No postage for prescripion drugs either .

I got them from www. bestpet.co.uk

Good call JAX! I wasn't on much when all the new medicines regulations came about, I should really have posted something at the time. Too busy making sure we complied, I guess!

Basically vets have always been obliged to offer prescriptions, but prior to these new regulations could charge for them. Now (for the next 3 years) vets are not allowed to charge any fee for prescriptions. Some practices may still charge a medicines decision fee to recover some of their lost income when a client buys their drugs elsewhere. After this 3 year period, we don't yet know what will happen.

The majority of practices are pretty miffed about this (try getting a private prescription from your doctor for free - not likely!) but we have to like it or lump it. Having said that, our drug markups are pretty reasonable, and so far our clients have remained loyal.

You might also have noticed the 'Top Ten' list of best selling drugs in vets' waiting rooms - this is now a legal requirement, albeit a bit ridiculous. It doesn't help an 80 year old Yorkie owner to know that our best selling antibiotic is Terramycin LA Injection, does it?! :D

What would you need a private pres. for  ? ILKC

Id just like to add , Mayzee still needs to go to the vet every 3 months for check up and to make sure she still need her tablets ( thats the law) o:)

Well, if you used private healthcare, you would have to pay for prescriptions. Likewise, if you wanted vaccination before travelling overseas, I believe you would have to pay for the vaccine to be prescribed.

As for regular re-examinations - everyone should have been doing that anyway!

I've been getting prescriptions from my Vet for years and for free!! If any of my dogs are on long term medication or even flea treatment etc I always price the product up from Vet-medic/Canine Chemists first and then see if my Vet can match it. If not ............... she knows what I am going to say.

Coco's Propalin I get cheaper than even the Vets can buy it in, how stupid is that!!

i put a post up a couple of months ago about this site as they also sell drontal worming tablets cheap too.

I also used this site for my wormers . Quick and free delivery on wormers

If somebody would offer me prescription drugs at price even my vet cannot buy at, I would be rather concerned. There is lot of drugs manufactured mainly in India and sold over Internet, which when analyzed had only fraction of the active ingredient, or in some cases NONE. And I am talking about drugs for people. So be careful; you know if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Or too cheap, in this case. :luck:

sorry to dissapoint you seraphina but this is a reputable site it has had a large write up inthe edinburgh evening news, the company has grown from a very small company into something quite large, you say you would not buy drugs at a price not even your vet could buy at?-since when did any vet anywhere in the world sell drugs for the price they pay for them?

the reason the stuff is cheaper is because they are a supplier-a huge warehouse run by 2 business men-not a vets practice full of high tech equipment to pay for and many years vets training to pay for!, if you loose the overheads you can also loose the over inflated prices.

Why should I be disapointed? If they are on level, fine. But why do the vets not get them then from this place?

I asked my Vet this question when I got the Propalin prescription.

It is because Vets are usually committed to one supplier and it depends upon the quantities that they buy in. Propalin, for instance, is only made by a small company (in Reading, where I live, strangely) who will then sell to the supplier that the Vets use and not direct to the Vet. I buy it from one of the two largest animal pharmacists in the UK whose direct buying power is much greater than the individual Vet practices. That is why we can get them cheaper. The same can be applied to wormers, the wholesale pharmacists buy them direct from the manufacturers in vast quantities which, in turn, means that we can buy them cheaper than Vets can.

It is all about buying power and supply vs demand. The same as supermarkets selling goods cheaper than the corner shop can.

Ouch! So who do you propose SHOULD pay for the hi-tech equipment and highly trained staff? The risk is that when one's dog becomes ill or injured in a few years' time, then the equipment will be out-of-date, in bad repair or of low quality, and the staff will be less skilled - with the potential for a bad outcome for your pet. I'm sorry, but you can't expect to take business from your own vet and not pay the price (financially or in terms of lower standards) somewhere along the line.

In most cases our clients are happy to pay our (always reasonable) prices and know that they can get free advice, support and follow-up from us any time of the day or night. More than any wholesaler will do - and we know your pet!

Yes, but only as long as there are the corner shops to compete with them. Here, where I live the local supermarket has no competition, and with population of many old people who cannot travel far, their prices are astronomical.

And as ILKC said; can we afford to loose our local vets? We may end up with large Veterinary Clinics, not necessarily close by, with a different vet on duty every time we attend, all employees and expected to process as many clients as possible.

I actually go a Vet that is the largest Pet Health Clinic in the area, full of hi-tech equipment and very well trained vets and who offer this Vets NOW service. Luckily I have been going to them for years & years, since the original partnership, so have seen it grow and blossom and become very expensive but have become friendly with one of the partners so I have her mobile phone number if I have a crisis. I would not abuse that trust and she knows that but conversely I will not just see any of the Vets there (and I shudder at the thought of Vets NOW) because I do not trust them and, this is where I have to disagree with ILKC, more importantly they do not know my animals.

However, this is rather off topic and I think both you and ILKC have missed the point that we are talking about wormers/flea treatments and REPEAT prescriptions and I cannot see a problem in shopping around for the best price possible. Nor can my Vet for that matter as I do it with her blessing!!!
