An Introduction & Getting The Word Out!

Hello all,

I've just joined the forum. From the posts and comments here it seems to have members who love the Whippet breed and who strive to maintain healthy & beautiful specimens. Yay!

A bit about myself:

• A mom to two kids (5 & 7) and a 9 month old Green Cheek Conure.
  A wife to a rather handsome, hardworking, loving and doting husband.
  I'm an interior decorator only taking on the clients I want. I work from my home office.
  We live in Ontario CANADA (brrrr!)
  We are without a dog and have been for some time
  

I have alterior motives for joining...I've been searching for a Blue female whippet pup from a reputable, ethical breeder. While I've not found one, yet, the breeders who've gotten back to me have promised to keep me in mind if they hear of potential blue pups.

So I figured if I get the word out on a forum...I'll increase my chances of finding my future baby girl.

Any direction to this end would be greatly appreciated!

I love the European lines being smaller and curvy...so beautiful!

BTW, why is it, do you think, the blues are mostly all in England and France etc? Here in North America I'm told repeatedly that I'll have a hard time finding a true blue.

So I'm off to look at the photos of the members beauties and dream of the day I can say 'I've got her'!

I have two whippet brothers, a black/ white and a blue/white. Their dam comes from show lines (she's fawn) and their sire from working lines (he's black).I didn't know that there weren't many blues in Canada. Over here (North West England) we see quite a few. My only theory as to why there aren't many in Canada could come from why people have whippets. I asked a question on here last year about why we don't see many blues and blacks in the show ring and was told that, among other reasons, blues and blacks don't show their conformation quite as well in lights of the show ring. There can be some bias in judging, in that it has been suggested that some judges think black/ blue dogs are somehow not as well bred as lighter colours so tend not to place them. Because of this, people naturally tend towards a colour that has more chance of winning. It's a contentious issue! Perhaps if people in Canada mostly want show whippets, it could account for the lack of people breeding blues/ blacks in favour of fawns and brindles? Here, a lot of the blue and black whippets come from racing and working lines where colour is not much of an issue and more down to personal taste.

I love all whippets, but do have a preference for the blues and blacks. Good luck with your search! Coincidentally, I'll be in Ontario myself next week visiting my sister in Caledon East :thumbsup:

BTW When I used to use Twitter I 'followed' a guy in Toronto who had a blue whippet. I'll try and remember his name as he may be able to tell me where he got his whippet from :thumbsup:

Suerose, your Grace is beautiful! I just can't stop swooning when I see a Blue. I love them all but there is just something about the slate blues!

Esty, Caledon is such a beautiful area. Hopefully you'll have great warm weather. This March in Toronto we've broken the record for the warmest March on record! Although currently it's cold and damp...and trying to snow.

My search is focusing on the UK and France mostly. I'd love to find one local (US or Canada) but I won't hold my breath!

The Canadian Kennel Club breed standard states that eyes must be "dark hazel in colour" and "at least as dark as the coat colour". But the American Kennel Club breed standard states "Eyes to be dark brown to nearly black in color. Eye color can vary with coat color, but regardless of coat color dark eyes are always preferred.". Blue whippets are the result of recessive genes that lead to paler eyes. Effectively in North America this is considered a fault and breeders generally would try to avoid it ... hence the shortage of true blues. Thankfully we see things differently in the UK 'cos I :wub: blue whippets !

You can see in this pic that Finn's eye's are not that dark a hazel ... although they are beautiful (he looks so old and grizzled in that photo and he's only 2 1/2!)

Thank you, although sadly the pups I've been posting pics of lately are not mine but a friend's litter which I was privileged to help hand rear in their early days after their mum tragically died when they were just a few hours old. Not much chance of pups here ... we only 'do' boys )

Thank you. Yes, there is something special about slate blue, it is such a subtle colour and varies in different lights. The only drawback I've found is that they are hard to see on a dark night! I have to take a torch out into the garden last thing at night to make sure she is doing what she should before we go to bed. And personally I love the hazel eyes that tend to go with this colouring. Grace's were almost green when she was a pup, just beautiful. Look forward to seeing pictures of your girl when you find her.

Although my boy is fawn (and I wouldn't swap him for the world!), the first whippets I fell in love with were blues, they are gorgeous and sparked in me a lifelong want for a whippet, trouble is I now want another and I'm not fussy about what colour lol!!! Used to dogsit for a friend who had a blue whippet, gorgeous Swipe, sadly gone to Rainbow Bridge and I do think they are special! Hope you find what you are looking for.

Welcome to the forum, I have to say I love the blues too. We have two fawn girls and I was very tempted to keep one of our rescues, Sidney. All going well he will be going to a fantastic new home this week. Good luck with your search :thumbsup:
