We feel really bad now :( all this time we've had Picco and we've only just noticed

He has a HUGE!!!! scar the full length of his belly

Its weird when he first arrived he had no fur there at all and we didn't notice it

But now his furs gone lighter in the sunshine its quite clear and its huge

Its about 7 inches long (w00t) so we can't believe we havn't noticed it before

So we're wondering what he had done now  our bet is he swallowed something he shouldn't have as he has a habbit of eating bedding and the insides of fluffy toys

No wonder he doesn't like the vet

Cheers

Steve

That is a big scar Steve - I can't recall ever seeing a scar that big on a dog's tummy especially for regular types of operations - I don't believe Layla's scar from her caesarean was that long if I remember correctly!

I had a little puppy once who swallowed a bone whole and the vet operated to remove it but I don't recall that pup having a huge scar either.

How strange - could be a mystery that will never be solved. I wonder if he could have been a practice dog for uni vet students. I know a whippet here who had that job, and now he lives with the sister of one of the vet students.

How many stitches? Since you have not noticed before maybe it was just a scratch.

Scarring is a strange thing. Over the years I managed to cut myself, got bitten by various creatures, yet the large gaping wounds on my hands have healed such a way that they are almost impossible to see. My most noticeable scar is from when I had a hand saw slip and it just grazed my left hand, it hardly broke the skin, and only some of the saw teeth brought out few drops of blood. That was some 30 years ago, yet this wound left me with very visible scar! (w00t)

 They use live dogs for surgery over there? :(

 I certainly have not heard about that. I wonder what the RSPCA would say???

What a mystery Steve  do dogs get appendix removed like us and such, I wonder if there was a problem with an internal organ at some point so they had to investigate, anyway hope you find out just so your not wondering forever

There's at least 10 clear stitches but their really far apart  I've had another look this morning and its bigger than we thought  it goes from his willy :b and finishes at the start of his ribcage

I'm suprised how big the stitches are  their almost an inch wide

I don't suppose we'll ever know what happened :( but Picco's always been a bit of a mystery and this just adds to it :D

I think we'll have to start calling him Picco international man of mystery :teehee: :D

Cheers

I don't know exactly what the circumstances were, but I've met this dog twice (a gorgeous black with white trim, and fantastic temperament) and on both occasions his owner told me that he was a practice dog for uni students and her brother got him for her. I didn't ask too many questions - didn't really want to know. Perhaps they practice simple things like taking temperature and checking inside ears and heartbeat etc - I don't know what they do.

Surely uni students have to practice operations on live animals at some stage under guidance from experienced teachers. I was always under the impression that Brisbane university had a section where you could take your dog for treatment and the students diagnosed and treated the dog under the watchful eyes of their superiors, or sometimes for difficult cases that required further research.

By "practice" I didn't mean open him up and close him up again on a regular basis when there was nothing wrong with him. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

Sounds like an amateur job to me. For all you know he may have laid himself bare on barbed wire or such like and his previous owners have sewn him up themselves rather than take him to the Vet. There are those around who will do such things!!!

But, as you will never know I wouldn't worry about it!!!
