Advice Wanted

Hi

I am a new member and this is my first post. I had 3 whippets, my old dog had to be put to sleep earlier this year. I now have a bitch (who is 11 years old) and a dog (who is 15 years old). I would dearly love another whippet, but would they get on with a puppy.

All dogs react differently but if you dont let a pup constantly pester the oldies then it shouldnt create many problems. The older dogs would probably put the pup in his place and let him know his bounderies.

I think it is very hard to know whether your older dogs would accept a puppy or not,a lot will depend on your dogs temprament & whether they are still active or not & get on with other dogs.I have an older Whippet she is about 9yrs old we think (she's a rescue so we don't know for sure her age) but whenever we got our last dog over two years ago now we agonised over it as Kizzy is'nt really that friendly to dogs she does'nt know,but she was actually fine towards the pup even sometimes playing with her,we now have two more pups which we kept from the original pup who obviously is'nt a pup any more & Kizzy gets on with too still playing as well,though she did growl at them at first but no real problem.

Would it maybe be possible to borrow a pup from someone just to see?And introduce them on neutral turf.Sometimes older dogs have become set in their ways & really don't want a young pup hareing around as they find them too exuberant,but you know your dogs the best so it's easier for you to tell if a pup might be too much for them!

This is only my opinion & I'm sure other people will think different but this is how I found my older dog was.

Thank you for comments. Hopefully with careful introduction they will be okay. A couple who we see in the fields have younger whippets and they get on well with them. Will keep you posted if we get a puppy.

I got my first whippet puppy when my old boy was 11 yrs old. He was always an only dog, but when I got the puppy , he turned into a great big puppy himself (w00t) . In time an older dog will accept a puppy , just be carefull for the first few weeks :thumbsup:

You could try a slightly older one, still young but past the puppy stage. There seems to be no shortage of whippets between 6 months and 2 years in need of a home
