Milo is 13 weeks tomorrow and can be such a handful. Just wondering whether I am maybe giving him too much run of the house etc. or not being firm enough with him. I didn't expect him to be a little angel all the time but am quite surprised at how boisterous he is. I have a one year old baby so obviously I have to be really careful when he is in one of his scatty moods as he will tear up and down the lounge and then launch himself at her :( I seem like I am forever telling him no and he just bites and nips and ignores me completely. I have tried ignoring him, time out on his own but nothing seems to get through :rant: I try to give him as much space as possible, he has his cage for when I have to go out and at night and also I put him in the kitchen/diner which has a babygate when he is being too scatty and I have to get on with other things. He can go in the garden and play with toys and I am always playing fetch etc. with him during the day.

I assume he is not the only mad whippie pup ( i am sure there is a "666" under that fur somewhere). :D

Vikki, 13 weeks is still VERY young!

Milo WILL settle down but and you`ll have to be patient with him.

If he really is too much,rehome him sooner rather than later.

Our Magic was a total shocker but is almost an angel now- and so happy.

we have had 5 pups in the last 4 years.... latest one is as mad as a hatter! runs around the living room like it's the wall of death... keeps beating up the others... who eventually put him in his place, he is not the worst by far... Puzzle was awfall he used to bite me all of the time, but never my husband, he never did as I told him, my husband only had to look at him!

My Granddaughter has just come to say (3 years old) and it is very hard.... keeping the dogs away from her they frighten her when they bark, so I feel for you..... your pup will calm down, but I think that it will be quite a while before it does... enjoy!
 
as soon as he is up to date with his injections get him to socialisation and training classes, :thumbsup:

he won't learn anything if you just ignore his antics or shut him away when he is bad, if you can spend a little time now teaching him the basics (sit, stay and come for a treat) you will reap the rewards later. :luck: :luck: :luck:

Do you know, I wish so much I had had access to K9 when Zephyr was a puppy. He was a complete monster and having wanted a whippet for such a long time, and having done so much research about ADULT whippets, I couldn't believe how bad he was!!!! (w00t)

I thought it must be just me being a bad trainer. :b He was really mouthy, the children found him completely over the top as he leapt all over them, :eek: he could steal anything as he could climb onto the kitchen units, and he chewed everything - table legs, chair legs, remote controls, cables, wires, toys etc etc!! :angry: And he didn't seem to care in the slightest if I told him off either! :blink: Like you, I also had a baby at the time, and that meant that the moment I was concentrating on feeding or changing the baby, however fast I was, he had done something awful in the meantime - there was definitely a lot of attention seeking going on!!!! :p

Then at about a year old, he just grew up! :thumbsup: All right, he is an opportunist and will still take food if there is any chance of it, but we all know the score! He is a delight to live with and very popular with all our family and friends. :thumbsup: :huggles:

So keep going, I do know what your're going through and so do loads of others on K9! I think I would be a lot more prepared second time around. :)) And I would invest in some bitter apple or something to spray on important bits of the house that you would rather not have to replace. :thumbsup:

Hi Vikki

Blue our pup (6 months today) is exactly the same. He gets two good runs a day with our other dog and has at least half an hour every day night of structured play - but I have renamed him Blue Blue Diablo!

Loves running laps in the house, not even a couch can stop him simply jumps straight over it; poor toy dinosaur get thrown vigorously around the room; rolls balls and throws toys at our lurcher Oscar and then starts barking at him when he doesn't play; does a couple more runs of the house... and then as though he has been hypnotised for an hour to turn into a devil dog, everything goes calm. He curls up on my lap like a cat and sleeps until we put him to bed.

I wish I could put my finger on it but perhaps there is more to the dog years thing than I give it credit because he acts exactly like my nearly 4 year old god-son!

I would never trade him - as it is one of the joys of owning a whippet and I love him to bits!

I hate to say it, Vikki, but it sounds normal! (w00t) Things will get better when you can take him out for walks, and you're always welcome here for a puppy play afternoon (once Logan has had his jabs). :thumbsup:
 
Yes ours was a little horror as a pup, but he rapidly learned that if he sat quietly for a while he'd get a treat far quicker than if he messed around, and meal times became bearable again. I might do a bit more formal obedience with the new one, it will be quite important to be a bit more disciplined with 2 dogs I think.

Hi Vicky,

He sounds exactly the same as Fletcher. I know exactly how you feel. My little girl is 4 just and I find it difficult splitting myself up between working at home, her and the dog. I have taught Fletcher sit and "leave" and they have been very useful (especially when he has one of her toys). When he brings me a toy to play with (one of his) I throw it then when he brings it back I hold it on the floor so theres no "tug of war" going on which he finds a bit boring and say LEAVE. Then I throw it again. He is getting better and sometimes I only have to say it 20 times now rather than 50!!! The point to all of this is when he has her toys I say leave and he usually will.

I might sound a bit "gay" when I do it but when I ask him to sit and he does I say "good boy to sit" to reiterate it. It all seems to work. I may however be talking utter crap as Flether is my first dog too. but hey, it works for me.

Its very stressful isnt it but when they are curled up and all cute you cant help but forgive them.

I hope you find some peace to enjoy your little one during the day. Try not to beat yourself up about the time the puppy takes up (also have these feelings) as I am sure him and your little one will become firm friends eventually.

It is like having two children isn't it. Looking back I think my little girl was easier.....

Since we are in the same boat (so to speak), if you ever need a chat or a good ole' rant, you can always PM me and maybe we could get in touch to moan about our little angels together. We could even have a moan about the pups!!!

Some excellent advice here and yes Id say quite normal for most whippets (w00t) (w00t)

I came in from work today to be greeted by cushion stuffing all over the floor (w00t) I was livid...... it was the cushion from the sofa bed, (totally ripped open) where the two of my dogs sleep when Im out. I did discover a bone underneath so guess they had been tryng to retrieve it to my horror (w00t) (w00t) Kobi is 9 months and Oscar is 16 months but I still dont know which one did it. :eek: (w00t) guess if its Oscar hes taking a little longer to grow up.
 
My pup is 9 weeks old and a little monster (w00t) ,,he is wild and I mean WILD :eek: . Robbie his dad was just the same and since Robbie turned about 18 months old, he became an angel o:) o:) ,,so I just hope this wee man is an angel a little bit quicker :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Sounds like a typical pup to me :D

Tam is now 11 months old and was no bother when he was tiny :huggles: o:) ,,,he a mister goody two shoes :oops: :D

my monster is also 9 weeks old. at 7 weeks she would come, sit and fetch(!) house training wasnt quite as good... :- " this week house training is going much better, but she 'thinks' she has discovered the option of Not Coming, Not Sitting and Not Fetching.. back to square one then.(she hasn't yet destoyed by teeth anything...)

now. any tips on stopping her crapping in the back of the car? (she seems to save some for short journeys... :blink:

My pup seems to go deaf in the garden :rant: ,,I want him in, but he runs about taking the p**S out of me :rant: . He runs behind the shed and just stands looking at me. I now go out with a piece of meat for him and he turns into a little o:) . He always wake's up at 1am and crys the place down till he is let out for a wee and sleeps till John get's up for work. He is getting better in some area's but worse in other's :oops: :oops: .

Just over a year till he calms down a bit (w00t) (w00t) (w00t)
 
Typical puppy behaviour I would say and like many have said they do eventually grow up and quieten down although some do keep their puppy behaviour for life! Our lurcher pup is now 12 weeks and is a smashing pup although he too loves to chase around the furniture at break neck speed, leaping over anything and everything in his path, zooming behind the furniture and back out again, leaping and barking - it is always the same time of night (7.30 p.m.) and it lasts no more than half an hour - he then lies flat out and sleeps for a couple of hours!!! His other speciality is playing hide and seek in the garden and he loves to hide behind something and then creep around it whilst I creep around the other way - if I turn back to face him he scampers off around the object in the opposite direction barking and with his mouth wide open as if he's laughing!! - He is a great pup and is already 99% toilet trained - have not had a single accident overnight since the day we got him at 7 weeks!

Things can only get better with your whippet pup and I really do hope that you decide to stick with things and not re-home him, but as previously mentioned if you do decide to go down this route, sooner rather than later would be best for all concerned. GOOD LUCK!
 
Thanks for all your reassurance that Milo is just a typical lively whippet pup and I am not the only one that gets stressed at times!!

Going to start some training classes next week as he will be allowed out then, can't wait.

We have been practising sits, stays, leave etc. for treats which he seems to be getting the hang of (well at least the sitting). Just need to be patient with his "scatty" turns when he tries to chew my hands to bits and make sure everything is out of his way, especially baby (w00t)

With the biting thing he could be teething, so leave lots of hard chewy thing for him to eat. Cause soft toys wont be any good.

Mine is the same and she is 9 months now, and still races round and break neck speed, chewing stuff and running off with the kids toys......the gardens thing bugs the hell out of me and i used to spend ages chasing her round to get her back in the house. Now i just say bye then and shut the door turn off the light and she starts crying to be let in....funny that eh !!!!!

She used to jump up at everyone when we came in through the door or let her out of her cage, we started to ignore her and push her away with out saying anything, when she calmed down we said hello and petted her, she soon learnt the way to get attention is to be calm.

Stick with it and you will have a lovely pup/dog which your child will have lots of fun with

Hi Vikki.

Glad to hear someone else has a puppy like ours.

We have a 11 week old called Rosie she can be quite a handfull at times bitting and jumping up.

When he bites shut him in the crate for two mins. keep doing it . Rosie is slowly getting the message. she is at her worst after her last feed. do you find this to be the case with yours?

Anyway keep in touch perhaps we can swap ideas!
