Advice For New Dog Owner To Be

Hi there, I am new to the forum and totally new to greyhounds. I am about to become a new dog mum to a 6 month old rescue greyhound who, hopefully, I will be collecting in the next week. I would just appreciate any advice on things I may need for her. Also, I have 2 Siamese cats and although the greyhound is used to cats, any advice on introducing them would be much appreciated. Thank you

Hi Maud, welcome & how exciting for you to be getting a new pup. Apart from the obvious toys & bedding & food etc, i would make sure you get a nice warm waterproof coat for her in this cold weather. Also a new ID disc with all your contact details on (i never put my address just phone numbers & vet etc), if i think of anything else i will add it later.

 

Regards the cats you shouldn't have a problem as they are there first & also you say the pup is used to cats, i would introduce them gradually & only when you can be there to supervise.

Hope you enjoy your new project! My advice is to join a dog training club and train and socialise your dog in a controlled environment - new friends for your dog and you :luck: Don't forget we will need photos!

Just becuase the greyhound is used to cats doesn't mean to say it won't have the occasional chase (w00t)

My 6 month old whippet has been here with 2 cats since she was 2 months old and will still have the occasional chase :sweating:

However she is not chasing with a view to kill she is chasing because it is fun and there lies the difference .

So I would expect there may still be occasional chasing but just make sure the cats can make a sharp exit if they want to .

Even if they are used to dogs they may still go in a sulk at this newcomer .

So what I am saying is just don't expect too much and maybe you will be pleasantly surprised :thumbsup:

my advice is don't listen to any of the don't let them off the lead brigade. Nearly all greyhounds can be let off the lead after a bit of recall training i.e food and long line.

I agree wholeheartedly with advise given above about getting your dog properly socialised as this will make your life so much easier and your walks will be more of a pleasure. Best of luck and dont worry greyhounds are really easy going and laid back :thumbsup:

Many thanks for all your advice. I will definitely be joining a puppy socialisation class, I've already checked a few in the area. Thanks also about the warning of the inevitable chasing of the cats - I will be installing stairgates so that the cats can bid a hasty retreat if necessary! I'm now counting the hours until we can pick our new greyhound up, fingers crossed it won't be long! Thanks again.

You lucky girl , is it show or racing bred? What ever it is you will have great fun with it , ,

I used to do obediancewith ny first greyhound ,Jemma, had her from 8 weeks , she won at obediance ( of only beginners stuff _) , won at Showing , but really excelled at what she was bred to do , .......race , she lived in the house with 8 cats , and on the track she was the keenest dog youve ever seen, she won races from 100 yds to 920 yds . I ve some pics of her on this computer some where , Ive even got photos of her with a bunny rabbit between her legs, and its not a dead one . LOL

Hi Jax, thanks for your post, it's really reassured me that a greyhound can live quite happily with cats!! I'm picking my new baby up at the weekend, there was a slight delay as she has pulled a stitch out, minor op on toe! I can't wait to get her. She has never raced but is in foster care at the moment.
