Sorry for hijacking this bit of the forum but I think this will fit well here. If not please feel free to move.
I am keen to get Oreo a companion in the near future, and my partner is very keen on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel due the nature of the dog among other things.
I think they're lovely dogs but they really do come with a lot of potential hereditary medical issues, and probably have more than their fair share of issues.
I on the other hand would prefer a bigger dog. However I think we're both in agreement that a second dog would be good for Oreo in the long term we are determined that a) we get the right breed of dog for our situation and b) (more importanatly) the dog gets on well with Oreo.
Anyway after doing a few weeks of research Cavaliers and also Greyhounds seem to fit and given my preference to a 'bigger dog' I can feel myself pointing towards looking at greyhounds.
I sometimes go to the dogs on a Saturday night and that's as close as I've ever come to a greyhound really. There are many greyhound rescues offering ex racers to suitable homes with some really good packages too, like leads and collars and insurance etc etc.
I know dogs have seperate personalities but what would I be letting myself in for in general with a retired greyhound?
Do they generally get on well with other breeds of dog?
How are they with other animals given that they're trained to chaise?
Can you get insurance for them fairly easy?
Are there any common illnesses in greyhounds?
Thanks for your help in advance.
