Hi,

Id just like to introduce myself. Im david and im going to start racing my whippet at Oxford this year. Just wondering if anyone had any tips etc for a beginner.

A big Hello back to you,

Welcome to a great sport, we are only just starting our 3rd year in racing and have totally fallen in love with it.

My tip as a newbie myself, for what it is worth, would be to listen to any and all advice given to you, chuck out the irrelevant stuff and adapt what's left to you and your whippet. Oxford has some very experienced racing people and they will be very willing to help you develop your whippet. We were very lucky with the people we met and the help we got from the clubs we raced at esp East anglia.

Finally, enjoy it, your whippet should love it and hopefully so will you.

Ps oh by the way if you do full in love with it, expect to get at least another whippet within a year or two as we did :lol: You ask anyone on here one whippet is never enough.
 
Hi David - and welcome to K9 :)

You don't mention the age of your dog and if he or she has even seen a track yet, but whatever his/her age, it is never too early to take it to a meeting just to get it accustomed to the sights and sounds of raceday.

Other than that, speak to people at which ever track you go to - and as was pointed out on another thread, if Newmarket isn't too far from you, we race pretty much through the winter, every 2 weeks (next meeting this Sunday) You will be very welcome to bring your dog and trial, if he or she is older than 6 months.

Hope you and your dog have fun, and I'm sure you will :)

He is coming up 9 months and no he hasnt seen a track yet. Im away in kenya for 5 weeks with work on thursday so im hoping to take him down after then.

Just wondering if anyone has had the problem of dogs running off to see/play with other dogs because thats the habbit he has now so need it drilled out of him really. He is going to classes so hopefully it will sort him out but not to sure if what thee teacher says will work.

Well at least he is friendly!

Recall is an ongoing training project for most sighthound owners. Keep at it. Reward all the good ones and ignore the bad ones.
 
Had him out today on his new extendable lead (hence the harness in the picture) and he was good as gold. I kept him distracted from other dogs and although he knew they were around he didnt really bother with the whist on the lead. I waited till there was no dogs around to let him off and he was fantastic with the recall so im a happy chap today. However if there was another dog appear he would probbally be off.

I had similar problems with my first whippet! :unsure:

I solved it easily by getting another whippet for him to play with :thumbsup:

Mind you they are addictive so it might not stop there

Hi David - I answered you on he other thread about running away.

One of the best ways to get him back again is to run away from him yourself. It's doesn't feel right, but trust me - if he sees you running he will chase after YOU in preference to anything else :)
