Hi,

I'm a new dog owner and our Ned is 8 weeks today. He's extremely clever in a lot of ways wee's & poops in the garden, sleeps in crate from 11-6.

So the prob were having biting/nipping he goes into these frenzies- I realise he's teething and we have tried detracting with toys, saying Ow, saying No

- Is it worth getting a playpen and putting him in there as a timeout?? Thanks

The "Ow" is the way to go but you must pair it with a negative emotion in your puppy. This means withdrawing all attention when you say "Ow". Timing is of the essence.

If children are involved then teach them to say "ow" and immediately become a statue. Dress them in tough clothing so that they are able to withstand any further biting that comes after the "ow".

Speak firmly to any men in the household that they are not to be brave and put up with any biting. It is not allowed, it is never an accident! Every single bite must result in a negative reaction (withdrawal of attention) from the human being bitten and the puppy will understand, eventually, that it is their fault they are being ignored.

Sometimes and extinction burst occurs when the behaviour gets worse for a short time. This is a good sign and means that they puppy is becoming frustrated and is about to give up doing it! You must persevere through this to achieve lasting success.

It is a life saving exercise to teach a dog to inhibit its bite.

Enrolling in Puppy Classes, run by the APDT, are an excellent idea. You get weekly support and guidance through all the trials and tribulations of puppy rearing and start the basics of training too.
