Hi I have a 5 month Fox Red Labrador he is an active dog, happy and healthy other than soft stool. He has been on Skinners Puppy Food Field and Trial as this was what he was on from the breeder. Fed three times a day on Skinners recommended amount for his weight. Apologies for the graphic details but he does a big stool very soft followed usually followed by about 2 liquid stools small amounts this is about 4 times a day, with very smelly gas throughout the day.

He has been to the vets and they don't seem to be concerned with this he is a good weight and up to date on vaccinations and worming.

I would like to change his food as I have read a few forums and a few people have had the same issue with Skinners due to the high protein content. Can anyone suggest a good alternative dry food.

Has anyone tried probiotics for puppies I read on another forum someone who had introduced these to their dogs diet but I don't know enough information to make an informed decision.

Thank you
Lauren

FortiFlora is a good probiotic. I think you have to give it for at least 4 days. You could try Natural Yoghurt first if you have some?

The All About Dog Food site is excellent for sorting out a good quality dog food. It is now thought that it is the "quality" of the protein used in the food rather than the quantity that matters. Proper meat from a reputable source rather than using cheap fillers. Take a look at the All About Dog Food site and see what is in some of the food.

Several of my dogs, over the years, have had soft stools after exercise. All their other poos have been normal though. My current dog is producing normal stools all day and then the last one, on his evening walk, is liquid. I take this to mean his guts are nearly empty and the exercise has made him produce a stool that should not have been produced until it had firmed up in his lower bowel. Hope this makes sense.

After reading the above website and talking to the excellent people at my local pet shop I chose to feed my dog Gentle dog food. It is cold pressed rather than ultra heat treated. He is doing very well on it but it is very expensive! Having said that you only feed a very small amount. He is not happy about that!
