Hello Everyone!

This is my first post in this forum and I hope there are a lot of people with knowledge that can help me.

Me and my girlfriend have a 1 year and 10 months old whippet girl which is lovely. Until recently when we moved to a new apartment it didn't take long until we got a complain about a dog who is barking all day long. At first we were certain that it's another dog in the building. It turned out to be her... We left her home alone one day for about 2.5 hrs and after just 5 minutes she started whining and after about 10 minutes the barking starts. I know this because we recorded at the same time and we listened to it afterwards. I should say that me and her went on a hour long walk before we left her. We also went to a exercise yard were she ran for about 30 minutes.

We have always thought that she handled it very well since we have never heard her bark before or heard from neighbours about it. As it looks now we can't leave her alone for 15 minutes which is a huge drawback for us.

Is there any suggestions from you guys what we could do?

Hi Markus

I had exactly the same with my whippet, I got a complaint that the dog was constantly barking when we were not there and we had absolutely no idea that he was doing it. He had seperation anxiety and we tried everything but it gradually got worse and worse as he got older and eventually it got to the point that we were scared to come home as he would wreck the house. We never left him for more than a couple of hours as any periods longer than that he went to my parents house. It got a very bad state and we decided to get another dog for company for him and that cured him instantly and he never ever worried again about being left.

I dont know about your dog but ours knew when we were gettig ready to leave the house and he would pace and get himself in a right old state. We tried eveything that was recomended to us but the only thing that worked was compay for him.

Dont know if this is of any help - good luck

Thanks for your replies! Now I know that it's not only Havana that has separation anxiety then =) I don't think that another whippet is in the plans right now but you'll never know!

Another suggestion is to crate train your dog. This gives him a 'safe place' of his own and prevents the destruction that one reply talks about. Whippets tho' are very social dogs......... that's why most of us have more than one............ and if on their own they use their humans as their extended pack! Good luck!
