Hi I'm new to this site I have had dogs all my life and currently own a 10 year old lab and we've just got an 11 week old cocker spaniel. He is gem of a dog but has constantly had runny poo since we got him 10 days ago. He's had his first jags and we are worming him with panacur paste. I've been feeding chicken and rice the past two days but his tummy seems so upset. The breeder kept chickens, could he have ccaught something from there. He seems lively and happy otherwise. Tonight we noticed grains in his poo but I'm not sure if this rice or worms any advice gratefully received. Thank you.

Roundworms are long and wriggly. Tapeworms look like grains of rice when they are dead. When alive they can stretch out long and contract quite small.

Any kind of worm burden will upset your puppy's tummy. The best thing to do would be to take a sample of poo to the vet. They can do a worm count on it and give you the right treatment for that type of worm.

My dog had Giardia, which is a type of worm, before I got him. This causes bowel problems and needs special treatment.

If worms are not the cause then lots of other things can cause runny poo. Over feeding is one. Eating rubbish is another. Allergic reaction to certain foodstuffs is another. Chicken and rice is usually fine. You could try egg and rice to see if your puppy is sensitive to chicken. Cottage cheese is also suitable for delicate tummies.

Try giving your puppy some Natural Yoghurt for a few weeks. It is brilliant for balancing the gut after periods of upset.

Natural "Live" yoghurt is very good for replacing bacteria in the gut. The Goat's yoghurt would be best but cows bacteria works too. This can be used any time and also as a treat.

Your problem could be an overload of worms, change of diet, new home and different treats, water change and of course as simple as just too much!

My suggestion would be to change your young puppy from a dry kibble and onto raw meat and bones, although I understand that this method is not always possible but do stop all foods and treats that have grains in them. You will find a number of products these days that are "Grain free", these are the best of the kibbles.

Kibbles can be so difficult for our dogs to digest especially those with grain/cereals in; Remember that RICE is also a grain and frequently used as a filler.

My last puppy (cocker spaniel) I purchased was on a grain based food, she was skinny and dull coated, and very soft poo's. I changed her onto a raw diet and within 2 days, she was eating the same variety as the adults straight away, it was easy and no problems. The difference was noticeable and within a couple of days her body condition was improving and her coat was starting to shine, her poo's were "perfect" and firm.

Raw products are so much easier for canine digestive systems to digest and are brilliant for young puppies too.

With in store freezers at places like Pets at Home and the internet raw products are so easy to purchase, no blood, mess or smell and complete raw nuggets can be purchased too.

Balance within raw feeding is just a good variety of products (not needed every day) just over a period of a few weeks which includes different meat types, raw bones/ chicken wings etc including skin, fat and gristle, and essential various offal including liver (but only small amounts)

We will all have different ideas and suggestions that could help solve your problem, but a good diet that our canine animals are designed for is a good start.

Hey we have a cocker spaniel (now 18 months) who was also very loose when she was young. We took her to the vet (which I think might be a good idea by the way, puppies with upset tummies isn't good for their growing) and they gave some antibiotics as a precaution. We were feeding her Eukanuba dried food but switched over to James Well Beloved which is hypo-allergenic and has really done wonders for her. Maybe try a few different options?

Hope that helps!
