Need a solution when we have visitors

Hi, thanks for your reply. Sorry, maybe I didn't phrase it well. The crate isn't used as punishment. Maggie is very used to it. She has used one as a puppy and sleeps perfectly in it at night and up until recently we put her in it if we had to go out. I just meant that when we had visitors over...

Need a solution when we have visitors

So we have had Maggie for almost 1 year. We have had a continuous problem when we have visitors over in that she will not stop barking at them. She is fine with people she knows but not with people she doesn't know. We have tried so many things, keeping her behind a gate, this made her bark even...

    Keeping dog off the sofa

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is a very light lead we are using which is on a lot of the time at the moment!! She gets off the sofa as soon as my husband approaches and says down but it doesn’t work so well for the rest of the family! We are trying to cope with quite a few other issues at the...

    Keeping dog off the sofa

OUR puppy is 11 months and has been a challenge since we got her at 6.5weeks old. Our current challenge is resource guarding. We manage it day to day well by avoiding her the opportunity to pick anything up around the house. She occasionally gets the children's socks and we are able to trade...

    Increase in resource guarding .....:(

Great thanks @ judyN we will try this approach when we get back. She has been a little better today but we will definitely address this behaviour when we get back after the Summer! Thaks for everyone's input.

    Increase in resource guarding .....:(

@merlina, @JudyN & @leashedForLife, thanks for you replies and advice. This afternoon, I have paid more attention to what Maggie is doing and it seems it is when she is already on the sofa with someone that she tends to bark and 'warn' people off. However, if we continue to approach without any...

    Increase in resource guarding .....:(

I think when we get back I will see how she is and start to train a no sofa rule. At the moment I think she needs a clear cut message that she doesn't get to go on the sofa at all and doesn't get a say in who can and can't go on it!!

    Increase in resource guarding .....:(

Thanks for your replies. I think what worries me is that we leave in 2 days, so we have no time to do anything about this at the moment. This behaviour started yesterday, so is completely new. She seems very on edge since she finished her heat which was yesterday/today by my calculations. I know...

    Increase in resource guarding .....:(

Our 8 month old puppy has certainly kept us on our toes since we have had her as a puppy at 7 weeks. We have faced numerous issues. Her resource guarding behaviour has increased since she has finished her 1st heat. So we noticed that she was becoming increasingly protective about things she...

    Puppy decisions

We were in a very similar position at Christmas. We live in Saudi so had already planned our trip back to the Uk for Xmas when we got our puppy - once we saw her, we coudn't leave her there, so getting her after the Xmas holidays was not an option for us either. We had her for 4.5 weeks and...

Preparing to leave puppy during vacation.

We will be leaving our puppy for an extended period of time during the summer vacation and I am starting to prepare a list of things to tell my pet sitter. She has looked after Maggie before whilst we have been away and comes over to our house 2x a week for 2/3 hours at a time; so they have...

Help! Ran out of kibble - what should I replace it with?

Maggie is havanese/shihzu mix. I will try and add some cooked veggies as you suggested. I don't know very much about different types of diets for dogs, so have never tried this before. Sorry for my ignorance but what kind of raw bones can she have?

Thank you both @JudyN and @JoanneF

Help! Ran out of kibble - what should I replace it with?

Should I mix it rice or something? I was thinking more of what to replace the kibble part with, to bulk up the meal, so to speak. I left her with a frozen kong this morning which will hopefully fill her up a bit!!

Help! Ran out of kibble - what should I replace it with?

Morning Everyone, In Saudi, we have very limited choice of dry puppy food. I order Canagan grain free online and Maggie tolerates it when it is mixed with some chicken or some wet food. We have run out and my next order will not arrive until Monday. In the meantime, the only substitute I can...

    First signs of resource guarding!

Such helpful replies!! ( and gave me a few chuckles too!!) We have decided to go down the road of not fussing about it. Maggie got a sock yesterday and I left her with it and eventually she dropped it. She also got a Tupperware dish and we eventually Managed to trade for hotdogs!! It took a...

    First signs of resource guarding!

Yes, the latter is what we did yesterday and we were quite shocked by her reaction. We didn't expect her to be so snappy to the extent she drew blood. I am hoping it is a one off but I will be looking at everything on the floor now!!

    First signs of resource guarding!

Ok thank you. Maggie is a complete scavenger when out walking and is constantly on the look out for cat poo(:eek::eek:) or anything else she can pick up! She is doing well at following 'leave it' with tissues and such and is rewarded when she drops it. However, she seems to have found a lot...

    Blanket over crate

We have always used a blanket over the crate for our puppy. It is a light weight woven one and I think she likes it. When we pull it down we don't usually hear a peep from her until morning time! It cuts out the light, makes it quite den-like and also lets her know its sleep time. I know many...

    First signs of resource guarding!

So over the weekend we had our first experience of some resource guarding. Over the past couple of weeks our 7mth puppy had shown signs of passive resource guarding which I had been keeping an eye on. When she had a toy/bone she had left around she would run and snatch it if she thought we were...
