I believe he learned that if he howls, you'll come and take him to your bedroom. So his little "trick" works. He loves being close to you and that's why he's doing this. It's a form a separation anxiety. Have you tried separating the two of them?
I am looking for advice too. Luckily, my friend (the dog's owner) will be back in about two weeks, but until then I don't know what to do. The dog's really, really depressed.
