    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Once again, thank you for your comments and suggestions. My last post was in fact just an update on Harry, as I have been politely asked in the past to do so, and on this occasion wasn’t really asking for approval of how we were dealing with his numerous problems. Clearly I have struck a nerve...

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Hi everyone, Another update on Harry’s resettlement. 3 weeks ago, we welcomed Piksi to our home (and Harry). Piksi is a 4 year old female ex-show American Cocker Spaniel, she is quite used to having young and old dogs around her and after much corresponding with her breeder, we decided she could...

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Thanks Tinytom. At the beginning, we tried to introduce Harry to other dogs. He only met 3 males and after a few minutes tried to be aggressively dominant, not so with female dogs. So, based on this behaviour, we decided it should be a female. On the advice of our vet, he is still ‘intact’ as...

Thank you Flobo. I’m sure we’ll find something eventually.

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Hi all, quick update on Harry. Sadly, we still haven’t found a friend for Harry yet. There have been a few offers but the money being asked for 4-5 year old females that could possibly be good for him is absolutely outrageous! I’m in touch with a number of rescue kennels but it would seem they...

Thank you, I’ll have a good look at all of this tomorrow

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Thanks Judy for your reply. We have had a long chat with our vet regarding something to calm him down. The advice from the vet was that she didn’t think meds would help but to keep him intact as he would benefit from the testosterone.

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

As promised, here’s the latest news on Harry’s progress. Only a week since his temporary playmate went home, he had come on so far in the 2 months she was with us, he was a lovely, happy dog to have around. Sadly, in just a week he’s almost regressed to how he was when he first came home to us...

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Hi Nic. Thank you for asking and I’m sorry I haven’t given any updates, it’s been a constant ‘work in progress’ with little Harry. All of the advice given (thank you everyone) has been so helpful. The one hurdle we didn’t seem to be getting over was the car. Really sad as we couldn’t take him...

He will walk past the car at a pace! He puts the brakes on if he gets within a foot of the car.

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Thanks again. I also feel well and truly chastised by Joanne! Not immediately sure where you were going with chaining me to a chair but I do get your point! I should explain though that he has to walk past the car to get to the garden. The only way round this would be to park the car almost 300...

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Thanks everyone, so many ideas and so much to try out. Started with the sitting in a stationary car yesterday and a couple of times today with treats in the car and then play in the garden and more treats. He still won’t walk towards the car (all 4 brakes go on) but if he’s carried (thank...

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Thank you to both Joanne and Judy. All good sensible advice and tips. I think a fair bit of what you have suggested is already being slowly introduced, so it’s good to know I’m not doing anything wrong. Funnily enough, while I’m writing this, Harry, who has had a very good morning today, has...

    Unsocialised, fearful young dog

Hello, I have just joined dogforum.co.uk and it was suggested by one of the members that I look at this particular forum topic for possible advice, as I have just adopted a totally unsocialised and extremely unconfident young American Cocker Spaniel. His name is Harry and I think he has spent...

Thank you. Yes, slowly slowly is the only way. Never had an unsocialised dog before so everyday is a school day with Harry but he’s worth it.

Thank you. I’m hoping he settles down soon too. The poor chap has been kennelled for the first 12 months of his life and although he loves being indoors he is terrified of anything that goes bang, squeak or involves going beyond the boundaries of the garden.

Yes, Caithness is all of those things and more. Extremely friendly people, fantastic views both inland and out to sea, quiet (most of the time) and a wonderful part of the Highlands to visit. Oh, and no midges here!

Hi everyone, My name is Michael and I live in Caithness (very close to John O’Groats). I have a very new (to me) 14 month old American Cocker called Harry. He’s been with me for 2 months now and is extremely challenging (he is afraid of everything). I started dipping in and out of...
