Thought I'd do a little progress report! The postcard has been shared around and I'm still plugging it here and there whenever I get the opportunity. I have amazingly noticed quite a big shift in people, in the woods where I walk one of my anxious dogs on lead. (A while back I did also pin the...
I'm so, so sorry for your loss also, your Sam looks beautiful. Please be kind to yourself, it sounds like you were there for him his whole life, that moment at the end was just a moment, he was there in your arms being reassured and loved...he would of known you were there without a doubt...
That would be my first port of call too, vet check, if you can rule out it being a medical problem first then you can look at it as a behavioural issue.
I am sorry to hear about your boy, I've had no experience of these drugs but if you have any concerns re the side affects there's no harm ringing your vets for reassurance or advice. His comfort now is the important thing, sending kind wishes...

Depending on the answers to all of the above my initial thought was under active thyroid, so vet check may be in order... a bit more info would be good, also I am not a vet, but it's unusual for a dog to sound so uninterested as you described briefly.
Sorry to hear you've been in hospital, I do hope you're home and well now. I would second the dental check as he is an olden isn't he? You being away could also of affected his eating, anxiety and stress will impact appetite for sure. Try adding warm water to the wet food as @JoanneF suggested...
