A dog won't mess in it's own bed (usually) so in a small crate, it will be forced to hold it in to avoid doing so.

Thanks all :) he's getting better and more lively with age. I have looked at clicker training previously and use several of the techniques already just by snapping my fingers. He's making great progress. Just need to find out what excited him the most I think!
with our whippet we had this and we simply gave him his last meal at 6 and anything he hasn't eaten by 7:30 (unless he's literally at his bowl eating) is taken away.
He has a poop around 10ish and doesn't go again until the morning when we let him out.
now if only he would start sleeping in...
Thanks for the reply. We try to keep things short and sweet with him, often it's actually getting him in the mood to want to learn that proves the most difficult.
