I should add that finding something my puppy likes is not in any way a problem - to him, EVERYTHING is delicious - cardboard, wood, grass, bark, plants etc.  He would eat anything you put in front of him.  Except, rather curiously, the tops of carrots!!  Sadly this means he has to be on the lead...

Thanks gypsysmum2. I only use his kibble as treats and take out of his daily food allowance. Arg! New vet has immediately sent bloods off for pancreatic insufficiency test so you may have been on to something... I'll let you know. Thanks again!

ok this is very helpful, thank you. So here is a question. If your dog (male) is in 'randy adolescent' mode - what do you do/how do you handle it when he is trying to hump every female in the park (we live near very heavily dog-populated park!!)?
