It would appear that Speckle’s juggling with issues that aren’t part of her norm - recently on heat, someone else (albeit not a stranger) apparently now part of her household, her feeding pattern interrupted. She’s also part whippet - from experience with Mabel (our rescue whippet) she’s...
My word, you’ve really been through it, Biker John. As has been said, these dogs will pick up on moods at the drop of a hat. I try to dissimulate (or even go to self denial) whenever our rescue needs something done - nails trimmed and/or attention to corns with an emery board. How effective I am...
There is a question that hasn’t been asked and please don’t think that you’re being judged - why have you taken on another life that’s dependent on you? What was his previous situation? As others have suggested, you need someone to come in during your absences. If that can’t be effected either...
I’m sure that you have a book or a film downloaded onto an iPad - an ideal self indulgence with no pangs of guilt. Just enjoy yourself in the garden and let them come to you as and when. That’s what I’m doing on Saturday for a neighbour - French windows open onto the garden so their rescue can...
Welcome to the Forum. I found it really helped when I took on this rescue - head in hands and wondering why I couldn’t get through to The Samaritans. However, there was lots of sound advice from experienced and empathetic members. Photos would be appreciated. Best of luck.
Sorry, that went off half baked. Trying to give her a lovely treat as a distraction doesn’t work - she has a mind set. We just have everything lined up and ready and try to get it over in 30 seconds. Once it’s over she’s fine but she’s suspicious by her idiosyncratic nature. We’ve never had a...
You people are so kind and we’re touched by your responses. However, please believe me when I say that we’ve tried the clipping of dried spaghetti - “it’s new, I don’t like it, I’m off….”.
Trying to give her a lovely treat as were
I’m aware that this isn’t something that can be sorted overnight if at all. It’ll be a recurring issue. For the time being I’ll just keep on using a balm to soften the skin and see what I can remove. After that a chiropodist has suggested using an emery board which would be easier than a dremel...
JoanneF and arealhuman, you made me laugh. It’s amazing what one takes for granted. That wooden gull’s been in the conservatory for yonks. Now, back to Mabel’s pads…..
As I was applying the tape yesterday evening I noticed that there was more protruding hard skin. I removed as much of that this morning but still have some way to go so I’ll be using the balm everyday and lifting what I can for the next few days. There’s also a corn emerging on her left forepaw...
What a super idea and yes, I’d join you together with assorted sighthounds at the drop of a hat. More than happy to do the cooking and provide dry humour and another drumkit.
Too right, arealhuman. There are some sick people out there. Yesterday I was told about individuals who commissioned people to film macaques being tortured. Whether it’s true or not it just makes me want to retreat into my safe haven with my likeminded contemporaries and disengage from society...
Thanks, JudyN. You’ve been so helpful. Our neighbour’s been over for dinner and has brought a roll of the magic tape which I’ll apply in the morning - Mabel’s settled so I’ll leave her. For the immediate future I’ll use just the tape. Will send you a PM re more info re Jasper C.
Me again. I’ve just had a look at www.pets4homes.co.uk and the initial treatment is “Hulling the corn is often the first course of treatment considered, and this involves the vet using a blunt hooked tool to pry the corn out of its bed and free it from the pad”. The website goes on to state that...
As the top of the corn had partially lifted I used Burt’s Bee Balm (lip salve - peppermint flavour?). I managed to lift a very hard cap from the corn. There is more to remove but I’ll proceed with the Gorilla tape when I can get some. I’ve no idea whether I’ve managed to alleviate any of her...
