I might be totally off the mark here but a friend of mine had a dog with the same sort of problem all year round but more so in summer and it turned out that the long grass would aggravate him so much and it result in what your saying, I agree with what's being said above also about gentle dog...

i dont know if this will help when i was training my collie for recall i used a ball a would throw it gentle to the other side of the room and then when she got it id call her back but if she didnt come back with it when i asked her to and would go and do...

heeey I had exactly the same problem with my collie, peaches, i got one of those like heavy duty thick plastic beds and filled it up with thick blankets so she would still try and chew the edges of the bed but she wasn't ripping things apart so, also I dont know about you but peaches would do it...
