Sunrise Cottage, Cumbria, on the roof of England 1500' up in the north Pennines is not for people who need civilisation on the doorstep! It is a mile from the village - and from two pubs! - and 4 miles from Alston, a lovely small market town with cobbled streets, real shops, dog-friendly pubs and cafes, and the South Tynedale Railway. Sunrise Cottage is just outside the Lake District and is also well-placed for exploring Hadrian's Wall, Hexham with its Old Jail and Abbey, Durham Cathedral and many other historical and beautiful places.
There is abundant wildlife from the red squirrels crossing the road to the short-eared and barn owls you can watch from the bedroom and the deer that can be seen from the kitchen table. Kestrels nest in the woods and buzzards hunt over the fields. Lapwings and curlews cry overhead and black grouse lek on the Moor.
Explore the local history - from Romans through border reivers to the mining and industrial heritage of the area - or walk to one of the many dog-friendly pubs and cafes.
Sunrise Cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms and has a large enclosed garden with a barbecue, a sauna and a multi-fuel burner if the weather is bad. Wifi is limited but there are lots of books, games and DVDs!
